Book Review { The Choice }

Synopsis: Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life—boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies—he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the appealing redhead seems to have a chip on her shoulder about him…and the presence of her longtime boyfriend doesn’t help. Despite himself, Travis can’t stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, The Choice ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

Despite what others may say about this book, I really enjoyed and it couldn't put it down. The book is set in Beaufort, North Carolina; a place I know very well. I have spent my summers growing up there with my family at our beach house at Atlantic Beach.

Going into this book I had absolutely no idea what the book was about, I finished it before the movie came out, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was definitely a little confusing when it went to Part Two and completely changed gears, but I loved how Sparks was sure to fill us in with all that we missed.

*SPOILER ALERT*
The book went a completely different direction I had ever imagined and the direction it went I could relate to very well, so I think that is why I enjoyed this book so much. Gabby and Travis were in a car accident and Gabby was in a coma, Travis had to make the hard decision of taking her off life support or keeping her on it. When Sparks expressed the emotions and thoughts Travis was going through I really felt connected to him, because I had to make that very hard decision with my mother when she was in ICU.

I used to be such a big fan of Nicholas Sparks (seriously, I even visited his website almost daily when I was in high school, but he also had a lot of good writing advice on it--I don't know if he still does--and as a writer that appealed to me) but haven't read much of his new stuff. I often think I should check out some of his newer stuff, though! My faves: The Notebook (I loved it before the movie), A Bend in the Road and The Rescue. I'll have to check this one out. Thanks for the review!

Nicholas Sparks books ALWAYS confuse me and I end up in tears. I don't know if I can read this one because the commercials for the movie look a little heart wrenching and my pregnancy hormone ridden self might not be able to handle it. =0)

Stopping over from the link up! Looking forward to checking out more of your blog. Please stop by mine as well!
