Things I Have Learned from being a Big Sister

Being a big sister has truly been such an amazing blessing and I never thought that these two girls would change my life the way they did. Caroline is my 17 year old Junior in high school half sister and Kaylee is my almost 15 year old Freshman in high school half sister. I cross out the half because I don't think these girls could be more than my full blooded sisters than they already are. We laugh together, we argue, we cry but most importantly we have a sisterly bond that no one will ever be able to come between. I am so thankful to be a big sister to both of these girls. They have taught me so much in their 15 and 17 years of life and I wouldn't trade them for anyone else.

Here is a little background: Caroline and I have the same mom but different dads; Kaylee and I have the same dad but different moms.

I remember the day Caroline was born. I was 7 and all I remember is waking up to my step dad telling me I had to get dressed because my little sister was coming. I remember to this day what I put on..I had bright yellow shorts with a blue tank top with fish on it and had a big yellow bow in my hair and went to the hospital and waited for her arrival. I was so excited!

I also remember the day Kaylee was born. However I wasn't at the hospital because it was Easter weekend and I was at the beach with my moms family. I had anxiously been waiting by the phone to get the call my other little sister was born! As soon as we got back to Raleigh I went straight to the hospital to see her!

As we grew up, both of my relationships with my sisters were tough because there was such a huge age gap; Caroline 7 years and Kaylee 10 years. When I was in middle school and high school I thought they were so annoying - they were always copying me and following me around. Although it took a few years we are now making great memories as sisters and it can still be tough at times but I love them dearly and we will always be sisters.

Things I Learned from being a Big Sister

Love -  No matter how annoying your younger sibling can be, love them at all times. I can't tell you how many times I told my younger sisters I hated them or yelled at them out of frustration but made sure to tell them I loved them immediately after or after I calmed down. I love my sisters for who they are and they love me for who I am; we don't have to pretend to be someone we aren't.

Friendship - Having a younger sister really taught me the value of friendship. Having a sister means you will always have someone in your corner. Both of my sisters are always so encouraging and are always there for me even if it is 4AM in the morning.

It's OK to be Different - I can't tell you enough how different both of my sisters are from me. Caroline loves to wear black and more stylish clothing, while I tend to stay on the preppy side and Kaylee is more into the casual chic look; if I had to say me and Kaylee are more alike in clothes than me and Caroline. All of our aspirations are different - Kaylee still is unsure, I mean she is only a freshman, but Caroline she has her heart set on going to school in New York doing Fashion! It is OK if you don't have a lot of things in common with your sister, you are family so you don't need a lot in common to get along.

My only little sister was born on a Easter Sunday. I remember hunting eggs before I went to visit her for the first time. She's better than any old chocolate bunny lol. I find I appreciate our relationship more as I get older, it's definitely such a special connection to have with another person!

Such a sweet post!! I have an older sister and I can't imagine life without her...she's the reason I moved to Boston and beyond being my best friend, she's my mentor and I look up to her more than anyone else...it sounds like you have the same bond with your sisters! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

aww This made me tear up. My Sister has been in paris for a little over a year (at 15!) for school. I miss her so SO much. It's true what you say - My sister is my half sister but you would never know. I actually just realized it, how weird is that to think about.

This is awesome! I'm an older sis but have a poor relationship with my brother and that makes me sad!

I grew up with an older brother so I never got a chance to do all the sister girl talk stuff, but I am blessed to have a sibling to share life with!

Such a sweet post. I'm the youngest out of my siblings and I well remember being the "annoying little sister" that was copying my big sister. Our relationship isn't as close as it once was but I cherish the memories I have. Your sisters will too!

I totally agree with all of this! My younger half brothers are 8 and 11 years younger than me, so a lot of times I felt like a second mom more than a sister.

I love this post! I am one of four daughters, with two younger sisters who are eight and ten years younger than me! I love being a big sister and they are awesome aunties to my kids!
This is exactly the type of post I'm looking for for my new monthly link up, Monday Musings. It's live on my blog, Little Dove Creations, now if you want to check it out. :)

I have a younger sister and I wish our relationship was better, but it feels impossible more often than not! How great for you to have them and them to have you!

I love this post. I am a bigger sister too! I love it. There are times when she drives me insane, but I always know deep down I love her and I try to tell her that as often as I can. There is something about being different from your sisters that makes your bond even more powerful. Thanks for sharing what you have learned from being a big sister! I am sure a lot of sisters can relate.
